Word Search: complete guide

Rules, tips and answers for this free browser mini-game.

About this game

Word Search gives you sixty seconds and a freshly generated letter grid hiding a handful of words. Nothing is reused between runs: the words are drawn at random from a themed pool and placed in a new arrangement every time you play, so pattern memory never replaces actual searching. Three difficulty levels change the grid size, the number of words and the directions words can run in — from straightforward across-and-down on Easy to diagonals and reversals on Hard.

How to play

  • Pick a difficulty: Easy, Medium or Hard.
  • Tap the first letter of a word you spot, then tap its last letter.
  • Correct words highlight and are crossed off the word list.
  • Clear the whole board and a new puzzle appears with time still on the clock.
  • Your score is the number of words found in sixty seconds.

Game rules

  • Words may run horizontally, vertically or — at higher difficulties — diagonally and backwards.
  • A selection must be a straight line between the two letters you tap.
  • Each word can only be scored once per board.
  • The round ends when the sixty-second timer expires or you press Finish.

Tips to improve your score

  • Scan for distinctive first letters such as Q, X, Z and J before common ones.
  • Read rows in blocks of three letters instead of one at a time.
  • On Hard, check diagonals last — they are slower to scan but worth the same.
  • If a word resists, move on. Time spent stuck is worth more elsewhere.
  • Use the word list actively: knowing the length narrows where a word can fit.

Difficulty

Medium — the grid is never hard to read, but sixty seconds is short.

Average play time

60 seconds per round.

Why people enjoy this challenge

Word searches are calming and competitive at the same time. The searching itself is pleasant and low-stakes, while the countdown adds just enough pressure that finding a word feels like scoring rather than ticking a box.
