Number Merge: complete guide

Rules, tips and answers for this free browser mini-game.

About this game

Number Merge is an original take on the sliding-number puzzle. Every swipe pushes all sixteen cells in one direction, and tiles showing the same number combine into their double while adding that value to your score. A new tile appears after every successful move, so the board is always filling up faster than you would like. The skill is not in the merging — that part is automatic — it is in keeping the board organised so that a merge is always available when you need one.

How to play

  • Swipe the board in any direction, or use the arrow keys and WASD on desktop.
  • Tiles with the same number merge into one tile of double the value.
  • Every move that changes the board spawns a new 2 or 4.
  • Keep merging until no move is possible.
  • Restart at any time for a fresh board.

Game rules

  • A swipe only counts if at least one tile moves or merges.
  • Each tile can only merge once per move.
  • Your score is the sum of every merged value.
  • The game ends when the board is full and no merge is available in any direction.

Tips to improve your score

  • Pick one corner and keep your largest tile there for the whole run.
  • Only ever swipe in three directions; the fourth breaks your corner.
  • Build a descending row along one edge so merges cascade naturally.
  • Merge small tiles early — clutter, not big numbers, is what ends runs.
  • Slow down when the board is nearly full and check all four outcomes first.

Difficulty

Medium — the rules take ten seconds, the strategy takes many runs.

Average play time

60 to 180 seconds per board.

Why people enjoy this challenge

Every game ends in a position you built yourself, so the next attempt always has an obvious thing to do better. That tight feedback loop is why number-merging puzzles have outlasted almost every mobile trend they were born alongside.
