Snake Dash: complete guide

Rules, tips and answers for this free browser mini-game.

About this game

Snake Dash is an original take on the arcade classic that made phones fun in the first place. You steer a growing line around a thirteen-by-thirteen board, eating food that makes you longer and, crucially, faster. Every fourth bite drops a permanent obstacle somewhere on the grid, so the space you have to manoeuvre in shrinks at the same time your body grows. There is no level select and no lives — one crash into a wall, an obstacle or your own tail ends the run, which is exactly why the next attempt starts so quickly.

How to play

  • Swipe in any direction on mobile, or use the arrow keys or WASD on desktop.
  • Steer the head onto the orange food square to grow and score 10 points.
  • Avoid the outer walls, the grey obstacles and every part of your own body.
  • Keep going as long as you can — the run only ends on a crash.

Game rules

  • You cannot reverse directly into your own neck; only left, right or straight ahead are legal.
  • Each piece of food adds ten points and one segment of length.
  • The step speed increases with every bite, down to a floor of 70 milliseconds per move.
  • A new obstacle appears on the board after every fourth piece of food.

Tips to improve your score

  • Hug the outside edge early and keep the middle open for later, longer bodies.
  • Plan the exit before you take the food, not after — the tail follows you into corners.
  • Queue turns one at a time; buffering two fast swipes is what causes accidental reversals.
  • Treat new obstacles as fixed landmarks and build a lap route that avoids them.
  • When the speed gets uncomfortable, make wide loops instead of tight ones.

Difficulty

Medium — trivial for the first ten bites, genuinely tense after twenty.

Average play time

30 to 120 seconds per run.

Skills this game improves

  • Spatial planning

Why people enjoy this challenge

Snake is the rare game where you are your own obstacle. Every point you score makes the board harder, so the difficulty curve is entirely self-inflicted and perfectly fair. That honesty, plus a run length measured in seconds, is why the format has survived three decades of hardware changes.
